Around 14 Indian films from all genres and languages were selected for Oscars 2022. Director PS Vinothraj and Producer Vignesh Shivan’s Pebbles (known internationally) is chosen for this year. Announcing the good news on Twitter, Shivan said “ And the Oscar goes to….” followed by heart emojis.
The film is titled Koozhangal for the local audiences and Pebbles for international audiences. It is a Tamil film directed by Vinothraj. The story is about a young boy who left his parent’s house. His father is an alcoholic and abuses him that made him leave the house.
It describes the relationship between the two and is based on a real-life incident from the life of Vinothraj. The story is extra special for this reason but there’s more to it. Koozhangal was shot within a month at Arittapati, Madurai. Its location and surroundings made shooting difficult and the weather added more to it.
The movie made its first International premiere at Rotterdam’s Film Festival on 4th February 2021. It also gets global stage at the Jeonju International Film Festival, New Directors New Films Festival, Kyiv Molodist, and the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles.
Two more films- Mandela and Visarnai- from the Tamil film industry were on the shortlist for Oscars 2022 along with the Malayalam film Nayattu. Vinoth’s Koozhangal succeed to attract the jury’s attraction and was sleceted unanimously.
Now hopes are high from Pebbles. It will compete with other non-English films in the Foreign Language film category. The 94th Academy Awards will be held on March 2022 in the US.
Last year also no movie from the Bollywood industry managed to become India’s official entry for the Oscars 2021. South film industry’s Jalikattu was selected but it failed to win in the category. So far only 9 films from the Tamil Industry had made it to the list.
