Oscars 2021 Shortlist: "Jallikattu" Failed But "Bittu" Still In The Race

Recently, Oscar has released the shortlisted movies to be nominated in 9 categories for the upcoming 93rd Academy Awards. A short film titled “Bittu” has made to the Top 10 list. It is a very proud moment for the India and Indian filmmakers as the film is made under Indian Women Rising initiative.

Filmmaker, Karishma Dev Dube has always talked that her first film Bittu is very different from other films. After seeing its name in the upcoming Oscar awards, Bittu has started gaining even more support from the film industry as well as from the audience.

Recently, producer and director Ekta Kapoor has shared a teaser of this 47th Student Academy Award winning movie. Her excitement and nervousness doubles as soon as the list was announced.

Apart from Ekta, Tahira Kashyap, Guneet Monga, and Ruchika Kapoor are also supporting this unique story and sharing all the achievements of the film on social media.

The film is nominated in the Short Film in Live Action Category and has also made to the BFI London Film Festival and 18 others including Palm Springs Shortfest, Hollyshorts, and Telluride. It was also played on BBC World.

About The Short Film “Bittu”

The film is about the friendship of two girls from Himalayas who are completely different from each other; one is good at studies whereas Bittu is a star performer.

However, their friendship soon comes to a tragic end due to school poisoning event. The story is inspired by school poisoning 2013 happened in Bihar. It also portrays the innocent friendship between two girls and a child’s experience throughout the event.

The film is directed by an NY based filmmaker, Karishma Dev Dube. Her first debut film was DEVI on LGBTQ visibility which had also garnered million views and played in 152 countries.

Jallikattu Is No Longer In The Oscar’s Race

The announcement by OSCAR is definitely a happy moment for the filmmakers of BITTU but it shattered the dreams of Lijo Jose Pellissery. His 2019 movie “Jallikattu” failed to move one step ahead in the nomination’s list.

It is no longer in the race of Oscar nominees in the category of Best International Feature Film. Apart from Bittu and Jallikattu, Tenet also made to the list in category of Best Original Music.

This was the first time when highest number of movies was eligible in the Academy Awards. Among 93 movies, only the selected ones will now compete in following categories:

  1. Original score
  2. International features
  3. Documentary
  4. Makeup and Hairstyling
  5. Visual Effects
  6. Short film in Live-action
  7. Original song
  8. Animated short film
  9. Short subject documentary

The list will be further shortlisted and finalized on 15th March through voting. The Oscar award ceremony will be held in the month of April on 25th.
