The President of NITES, Harpreet Saluja, stated that they have received various complaints from employees of Tata Technologies situated in Hinjewadi, Pune. The complainants urged to press charges on being illegally terminated under the excuse of sustaining the profitability of the business during Covid-19.

He added that the IT company provided almost 400 employees furlough in June 2020. According to the employees, they were on the rolls of the company but did not receive their monthly remuneration. They continued to be on leave unpaid till 31 December 2020.

Saluja told Financial Express that Tata Technologies is an IT firm and according to law, such companies cannot furlough. Thus, the practice is illegal and has risked the jobs of more than 800 employees.

On March 1, 2021, around 800-1000 workers received an email mentioning their termination. The firm has breached Government’s orders, rules, and regulations issued on 31st March 2020 and other statutory labor laws.

NITES wrote a letter to Labour’s Commissioner explaining that they expect administrative authorities to update them with a framework to deal with the situation. They are also looking for related authorities to take strict measures against the company to set an example for other firms to prevent such insensitive behavior towards employees in the future.

Tata Technologies disproved the claims about the termination of 800 employees. The company’s spokesperson said that a specific number of employees who were already on the bench agreed to continue paid leave followed by an unpaid leave granted for a particular period of time. Although, they proceeded to be on the rolls of the Company.

According to Harpreet Saluja, they are yet to solve the issue regarding leave without pay and the company has now made the issue more complicated by sending the termination letter.

It seems like Tata Technologies might be in a big problem if the issue is not resolved soon. What are your views on it?
