National Girl Child Day is celebrated every year in India on January 24. The Ministry of Women and Child Development and the Government of India launched the movement in 2008. The day is celebrated to improve the quality of living for girl children.
National Girl Child Day 2023: Objective
On this day, various programs and campaigns are organized to create a healthy lifestyle for girl children. It is a time when we empower the future of the girls that can potentially teach us. The main objective of this day is to run awareness campaigns about Save the Girl Child, child sex ratios, and the creation of a healthy and safe environment for girls.
Other motives for National Girl Child Day include:
- Save the Girl Child
- Invest in her Education
- Raise her as an Equal Partner
- Provide her with equal access to opportunities
National Girl Child Day Significance
Our country has seen far ruthless times when girl children were hated by some sick-minded people of the country. According to estimates, more than 100 million women were missing due to gender discrimination. Also, in the past 30 years; the sex ratio has increased significantly.
India now has 1,020 women for every 1000 men, per the National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5) for 2019-2021. However, sex ratios cannot determine gender equality. Women and girls’ children are not getting proper education and in some parts of the country, they are still not allowed to even leave the house. The government has brought up a few initiatives to support and empower girls in India:
- Ladli scheme
- Kanyashree Prakalpa Yojana
- Sukanya Samridhi Yojana
- Balika Samridhi Yojana
- Ladli Laxmi Yojana
- Dhanalakshmi scheme
