Ever since the Oscars Nomination List for the 95th Academy Awards was made, people are curious to watch the Last Film Show aka Chhello Show online as it’s not available in theatres.

This Gujarati film has beaten films like RRR and The Kashmir Files to make its way to the Oscars 2023. India is now relying on Pan Nalin’s movie to bring the golden trophy home after the wait of 13 years.

It is directed by Pan Nalin who debuted with Samsara in the 2000s and gave several award-winning films like Ayurveda: Art of Being, Angry Indian Goddesses, and Valley of Flowers.

The film narrates the story of a small village boy Samay who is obsessed with movies. He skips school to watch films and even bribes a cinema projector technician for this. With each day, Samay’s curiosity and love for movies increase.

You have to wait to watch the Last Film Show online as the film has not signed any deal with popular OTT platforms.

The film is soon going to release in theatres on October 14, the same day Ayushmann Khurrana’s Doctor G will release.

  1. The lesser-known Gujarati film ‘Chhello Show’ was never released in theatres though it was made in 2021.
  2. Chhello Show is the first Gujarati film selected for the Spotlight Section at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival.
  3. It also received the Golden Spike Award at the 66th edition of the Valladolid International Film Festival. The movie won big in the Best Picture category.
  4. Spain, Japan, Portugal, and Israel are the countries where Chhello Show was released apart from India.
  5. Director Pan Nalin has cast mostly children for this Oscar-nominated film and it was shot in Saurashtra, Gujarat.

Hopefully, this time India gets to hold the golden trophy in its hands rather than clapping for other nominated films.

But the past records of Indian movies at Oscars suggest that the chances are slim. Because the kind of movies Film Federation of India has selected for Academy Awards so far has never won the trophy.

  3. Manthan (1977)- Inspired by Dr. Verghese Kurien ( Founder of Amul ), Manthan’s story did not make to final nomination list. Marty Pasetta’s Rocky won the trophy in the 49th Academy Awards.
  4. Naayakan (1987)– Mani Ratnam’s Tamil film featuring Kamal Hassan was a classic gansgter epic. However, it did not reach to Top 5 Nominations in Oscars at 60th Academy Awards. The Last Emperor was the winner of Best Picture.
  5. Salaam Bombay! ( 1988)– Mira Nair’s hard-hitting reality of Mumbai garnered huge limelight on the international platform but not the Oscar award.
  6. Lagaan (2001)- Hard to believe that Amir Khan’s Lagaan had not even got a single Oscar though it was in the nominations. A Beautiful Mind got the honor instead.
  7. Pebbles (2021)– P.S Vinothraj’s Tamil movie Pebbles was the last year’s nomination from India and no surprise, like other Indian movies it also failed to reach the finals.

Gully Boy, Jallikattu, Newton, Peepli Live, Devdas, and Rang De Basanti are a few more movies from India nominated for Oscars.
