Today is the death anniversary of Indian second Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, whose contribution to India is uncountable.

Shastriji was the first Railway Minister of India and served as the 2nd Prime Minister of India from 1964 – 1966.

Lal Bahadur Shastri promoted the Green and White revolutions in India to increase the production of milk and fight starvation.

He received the title of Shastri from the Kashi Vidyapith University after graduating first class in Philosophy and Ethics in 1925.

But moreover, Shastriji’s death has always been a subject of controversy. He died due to a heart attack in Tashkent in 1966 just after signing a Tashkent Declaration.

His family claimed that he was perfectly fine and there was no sign of any health problems. So what happened with Shastriji in Tashkent? Was it murder or natural death?

Shastriji was a pioneer in improving India’s food shortage problem.

He promoted India’s white and green revolution to increase the production and supply of milk and food across India. Through this revolution, India’s farmer conditions got improved.

Everyone knows that the Indo-Pak war broke out in August 1965. Lal Bahadur Shastri during this time gives a Slogan, which becomes a National Slogan of India Jai Jawan! Jai Kisan!!

Shastriji led our country successfully during the time of the Indo-Pak battle. But the war ended on 23rd September 1965 with a United Nations-mandated ceasefire.

After the ceasefire with Pakistan in 1965, Shastri and Ayub Khan both attended the summit in Tashkent (Previously in USSR now in Uzbekistan).

The summit was organized by Alexei Kosygin, the most influential policymaker of the USSR.

On 10 January 1966, both Shastriji and Ayub Khan signed the Tashkent Declaration.

Tashkent Declaration was a peace treaty between Pakistan and India and it was signed in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. This declaration would be possible with the intervention of the Soviet Union and the US.

According to this declaration, both of nations would not interfere in each other’s internal and economic affairs.

Both countries would work on their diplomatic relationship.

The famous conspiracy theorist journalist Gregory Douglas 1993, conducted a series of interviews with CIA officer Robert Crowley.

He taped that conservation and later released the book titled “Conversation with the Crow”

In this book, Crowley claimed that the CIA assassinated Lal Bahadur Shastri and stated “And we nailed Shastri as well. Another cow-loving rag head”,

And also Indian nuclear scientist Dr. Homi Bhabha, whose plane crashed into the Alps when he was going to attend s conference in Vienna.

He claimed that the USA was worried about India’s nuclear policy and PM Lal Bahadur Shastri, who wanted to accelerate nuclear tests.

He also stated that the US was more worried about India-Russia’s dominance over the Asian region if India succeeded in their nuclear mission.

What was the India Stance on the Death of Shastriji?

Indian Government and media were silent on Shastriji’s death. Later author of the book CIA’s Eye on South Asia, Anuj Dhar plead with the RTI to declassify the information related to Shastriji’s death.

PMO refused to answer this question citing it could lead to harming foreign relations, causing disruption in the country, and causing a breach of parliamentary privileges.

The only two questions about RTI applications were answered by PMO. It has only one classified file related to the death of Shastri and is exempted from disclosure under the RTI Act.

And they send the rest of the questions to the Ministry of External Affairs and Home Ministry to answer.

MEA concluded that the only documents they have is the report of the Joint Medical Investigation conducted by PM personal Dr. R.N. Chugh and some Russian doctors. It further added that no postmortem was conducted on the body of Shastriji.

Lal Bahadur Shastriji’s death is still an unsolved mystery. No post-mortem was conducted on the body of Shastriji. So the main reason behind his death is still a question mark.
