Do you know how many animals are slaughtered every year by the leather industry? The figure is around 159 million globally and approximately 3 crore in India. They are brutally treated, stripped, and even killed not only for leather but also for meat, bones, and experimental purpose. PETA is a world-wide organization acting as a voice of these voiceless victims and every year it honors those working in lines with PETA goals.
Today on World Wildlife Day, we are featuring the PETA India Persons of The Year who are raising awareness against animal crime.
The “Satyamev Jayate” star has been working with PETA India since its inception. He has always raised his voice for the caged birds and their cruel behavior against these beautiful creatures. John is also against the trading of live animals, animal circus, illegal pig slaughter, and running ad-campaigns to spread awareness about the same.
In his letter to Quikr last year, John urged the e-retailer to stop trading dogs, cats, and other animals as they may or may not be adopted by a responsible buyer. John has also shot an ad-campaign for birds saying birds deserve freedom and not the cage. A football jersey was also set on auction by John to raise money for helping animals.
Undoubtedly, Virat is an ace cricketer but he is also a responsible human being and has been awarded as the PETA India Person of The Year in 2019. He has raised his voice on cruelty and abusive behavior against elephants held in captivity for rides in Jaipur. The scenario was highlighted in 2017 when few tourists shared a pic of Malti, an elephant, who was brutally beaten by few men including her custodian.
A complaint was lodged against him on a letter written by Kohli to the Rajasthan Forest Department.
Sonam has encouraged everyone to adopt distressed animals on the streets and earned praise for embracing animal skin-free handbags. She has also urged for banning the dissection classes for students of zoology and life-science.
Besides this, Sonam constantly raises a voice for animals on social media and has called for a ban on the use of glass-coated Manja. Every year around 2000 birds are harmed and even die due to the sharp edges of Manja.
Sunny is a vegan and promotes the same through PETA campaigns. In a Lakme fashion week 2020, she had shot an ad whereby her skin was seen stripped and covered with blood. The photo is a reminder to everyone that animals do feel pain when they were brutally skinned for leather. Sunny has also urged people not to choose products made of animal skin as it not only hurts animals but also our environment.
Kapil has not only brought joy and happiness to our life but also the life of homeless animals. For which, he was awarded in 2015 the PETA India Person of the Year award. In addition to this, he has also adopted a retired police dog Zanjeer, rescued puppies, and has encouraged his audience to give shelter to the homeless animals.
Not just these Bollywood celebs, but politician Shashi Tharoor, KS Panicker Radhakrishnan who is a former judge of SC has also joined PETA to improve the lives of animals. We all can support their efforts by saying NO to animal skin-based products, meat, and adopting homeless dogs and cats.
