A major depressive disorder (MDD) which is somehow distinguished from a severe depression. In this form of depression, a person completely loses interest in almost everything. Along with the mental illness, it is also a serious physical illness.

Melancholic depression symptoms

The symptoms of melancholic is similar to symptoms of general depression but it has more severe effects. A person feels restless, agitated and is in low state most of the time.

  • Some detectable symptoms of people with melancholia are:
  • Not getting sleep in normal sleeping hours.
  • Feeling trouble in concentration or remembering things.
  • Getting thoughts of killing yourself (suicide)
  • Getting physically ill without having a disease.
  • Persistent feeling of sadness

How to Overcome Melancholic Depression

Proper treatment is needed if anyone is having any of the symptoms of melancholia. This can be done by psychotherapy and antidepressant medicines. Other treatments include electroconvulsive therapy (EVC).

Antidepressant: Medicines suggested by the doctors along with the therapy for proper sleep and keeping the patient`s mind at peace.

Psychotherapy: Along with other therapy and medications, this therapy may help in treating melancholic depression. But it is not always helpful in treating melancholic depression completely so that it never comes back.

Electroconvulsive Therapy (EVC):  This therapy is suggested by the doctors to treat melancholic depression. This is done by making one’s body and mind numb by giving anesthesia. And electrical signals are given to brain by the technician.

Medications and therapy both are important to treat melancholic depression.

  • Amitriptyline (Elavil)
  • Amoxapine (Ascendin)
  • Nortriptyline (pamelor)
  • Doxepin (zonalon)
  • Desipramine (norpramin)

Along with all the therapy and medications, talk therapy is also used to treat melancholic depression.
