The birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi was marked as Indian Akshay Urja Day by MNRE (Ministry of New And Renewable Energy) in 2004. Former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh had launched the first program to raise awareness about renewable resources.

The event was organized by MNRE where more than 12000 students all over the country formed a human chain. The aim was to aware people of the importance of green resources (solar, wind, biomass, and geothermal energy) in our life.

India is 3rd largest energy-consuming country in the world which means the burden on non-renewable energy is more. This pushes the country more towards finding sustainable resources to meet India’s growing demand.

However, the country is doing well in the global market and is the 4th biggest renewable energy sector in the world. We are 5th in wind and solar power but in terms of installation capacity, the country stands behind China, U.S, and Brazil.

India Sets A New Target On Akshay Urja Day 2021

According to a study by Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis, India has made some key investments and deals during a pandemic. This has increased the potential of the nation.

Now the country aims to set a milestone in its energy sector by reaching the target of 175 GW of renewable energy by 2022. At present, the country generates 101 GW and is working to install 50 GW which would be followed by 25GW installation in near future.

The total target by 2030 is to take India’s renewable energy capacity by 450 GW. This would require an additional investment of $500 to achieve the target.
