Justice U.U. Lalit Becomes 49th Chief Justice of India, Took Oath Today

India gets the 49th Chief Justice of India on August 27, Saturday. Justice Uday Umesh Lalit took oath at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in the presence of President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar.

Former CJI N V Ramana, former President Ramnath Kovind, and SC judges were also present in the oath ceremony.

Justice U.U.Lalit’s name was recommended by Ramana and was directly elevated to the SC from the bar. He is the 6th lawyer who has been directly elevated to the SC.

However, the tenure of 49th CJI will not be long. He will give his services for 74 days and retire on November 8.

Who is Justice U.U. Lalit?

Justice Lalit started his career as an advocate in 1983. He practised as advocate for two years and later shifted to Delhi from Bombay.

He is the son of U.R Lalit who was a judge at High Court.

In 2004, he got the designation of senior advocate in the SC. He also served as a senior counsel and later became the judge of Supreme Court.

He had also served as a senior advocate.
In 2011, he was appointed as a special public prosecutor for CBI in the 2G spectrum case.

He was also the part of 5 judge bench who took the historical decision to ban triple talaq.

 

49th chief justice of IndiaApart from these, Justice Lalit is also the chairman of National Legal Services Authority ( NALSA ).

Now he is the India’s 49th Chief Justice after N.V.Ramana.

As new CJI, Justice Lalit said he will work on simplifying the matter of fresh cases that requires urgent listing.

He also said SC will have a permanent bench of five judges to decide on important constitutional questions.
