“The team management wants to give Axar a full chance of recovery. His forearm and finger bruises have healed but maybe in another few days, he will get fit for the World Cup. India’s first match is on September 8 and hence there is time.
“As far as Ashwin is concerned, we now know that he is match fit and in rhythm. If Axar can’t make it, Ashwin walks in,” a BCCI source privy to the development told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
As the World Cup 2023 gets closer, here’s a look at India’s strongest playing XI for the 50-over megaevent:
Openers (No. 1 & 2): Indian skipper Rohit Sharma will open the innings along with Shubman Gill. The duo has performed very well as opening partners in ODIs this year. Both are in red-hot form as well and will look to score a mountain of runs in the ODI World Cup 2023.
Middle-order (No. 3 & 4): Virat Kohli will bat at his usual No. 3 position in the ODI World Cup 2023, and with his century in the second ODI against Australia, Shreyas Iyer has also ‘almost confirmed’ his place in India’s playing XI as No. 4 batter.
Wicketkeeper (No. 5): KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan are two wicketkeeper-batters picked in India’s ODI World Cup 2023 squad, and both are in good form. But since KL is the first-choice stumper, he will get preference over Kishan, who is a left-handed batter.
All-rounders (No. 6 & 7): Hardik Pandya at 6 and Ravindra Jadeja at 7 are no-brainers for the ODI World Cup 2023. The duo will play a big role as finishers and will also be very important as bowlers.
