At the beginning of this year, Elon Musk gained the 35th position in the list of billionaires. The addition of the S&P 500 Index leads to a surge in his company’s shares making his overall wealth to $114 billion.

This took him to third position beating the Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg whose net worth is $98.6 billion as per Forbes. Now, he leapfrogged Bill Gates whose current net worth is $127.7 billion as per Fortune

Bill Gates was the top richest person till 2017 when Jeff Bezos overtook the position making him slipped to the second position. He would not have slipped to the third position if he had not been in philanthropy over the years.

He donates for the charitable cause and also has a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that works for improving the lives of individuals across the world. Since 2006, Bill Gates has been donating to this foundation and till now more than $27 billion from his wealth has been donated.

Had he not involved in the charitable cause, he would have been the richest person.
