IPL 2025: Ruckus Over New RTM Rules Before IPL Mega Auction, Unhappy Franchises Expressed Objection to BCCI

IPL

IPL: Right to Match Card (RTM) will be used in the mega auction of Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025). The governing council of the league had recently issued new rules for the mega auction of IPL 2025. This time the Right to Match (RTAM) card was back. However, some changes have been made in its rules. Now there is an uproar regarding one of these changes. Many teams are not happy about this change and have expressed their concern by complaining to BCCI.

RTM returns with Dwist in this mega auction. Under this, the team making the highest bid for the player will be allowed to increase the bid before using RTM. This bid can be any big. The team using RTM will get the player at this price. Now there has been an uproar regarding this rule.

New Rules RTM Card

IPL

The IPL 2025 franchise has been given the option to retain maximum 6 players. Rest will also be included in the match. This time maximum five capped players (Indian/foreign) and maximum two uncapped players will be retained in the franchise. While the franchise will retain Youth Kam, the residuals from its player passes will be increased to wrist-to-match cards, which it can use in the auction.

According to the report, it has also been learned that the new rule could be due to BCCI’s main goal of attracting more and more star players in the auction. By setting RS 18 crore and RS 14 crore for the No. 4 and No. 5 retention ranked players, BCCI wants to discourage franchises from retention. Critics argue that this new RTM clause is not exactly in line with that idea and franchises can now opt for higher retention instead of the RTM option.

How Many Times Can You Use RTM

The RTM option can be exercised a maximum of six times in each team’s list, which also includes one uncapped player. Whenever a player is retired he can use Artem. Franchises argue That the essence of RTM is to determine the market value of a player. This objective will not be achieved unless any franchise increases the bid arbitrarily and the team using that much RTM has to pay the price. According to report, some franchises have formally submitted written complaints to the BCCI, while others have held discussions with its officials.

Franchises Complained to BCCI

IPL

Regarding the rate card, the franchise has said that its sole purpose is to determine the market value of the player. But BCCI has not imposed any cap on increasing the price for the team making the highest bid for the last time. Due to this, the bid can be increased arbitrarily during the auction .If this happens then it will have no meaning. According to the report of Cricbuzz, many teams have officially complained in writing to BCCI regarding the same thing. At the same time, some franchisees are discussing with the board officials.

It is also being said that because of this rule of BCCI, any franchise would prefer to use retention instead of RTM card. Because BCCI had set the target of bringing in this rule to attract more and more star players for the auction. On the other hand, RS 18 crore and RS 14 crore were fixed for players with number 4 and number 5 retention ranks. This allows franchisees to opt for higher retention instead of the RTM card option. Due to this, star players will not be able to come to the auction.
