iPhone Can Steal Your Money And Data, Know How?

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, thieves are using a simple method to gain access to iPhone users’ personal data and money.

The technique involves observing the passcode being entered, stealing the phone, and using the passcode to change the password associated with the iPhone owner’s Apple ID.

The victim is then locked out of their account, which includes everything stored in iCloud, and the thief can loot the phone’s financial apps since the passcode can unlock access to all the device’s stored passwords.

Once the thief changes the password, they can disable Find My iPhone, resell it, and even force other Apple devices to sign out of the account.

Why Is iPhone On the Target?

The vulnerability exists in Google’s Android operating system too, but iPhones are more commonly targeted due to their higher resale value.

Victims are typically targeted in public places such as bars and pubs, and nearly all have had their iPhones stolen while socializing at night.

After discovering that their accounts have been locked, victims often find financial theft, including charges to Apple Pay, drained bank accounts linked to phone apps, and money is taken from money-sending apps like PayPal’s Venmo.

What did the spokesperson say?

An Apple spokesperson stated that the company takes all attacks on users seriously, no matter how rare, and continually works to protect users from new and emerging threats.

Google also stated that it tries to balance allowing legitimate users to retain access to their accounts in real-world scenarios while keeping bad actors out.

Overall, this report highlights the importance of securing personal devices, especially in public places. It is recommended that iPhone users enable two-factor authentication and avoid storing sensitive information on their devices.

If an iPhone is stolen, the owner should contact their cellular provider and Apple immediately to protect their data and prevent unauthorized access to their accounts.

Other than this, one common method for theft is pickpocketing, where thieves will steal the device from an unsuspecting victim’s pocket or bag.

Another method is snatch-and-grab theft, where the thief will forcefully grab the device from the victim’s hand while they are using it. Additionally, iPhones can be stolen from homes, cars, and businesses if left unsecured.
