Indian Constitution Day: History, Facts, And Significance Of This Crucial Day

26th November is a very important day in the history and making of India. This day is known as Indian Constitution Day when the country adopted the world’s longest constitution in the year 1949.  However, it came into effect after one year on the same date in the month of January which we celebrate as Republic Day.

After 66 years, the day was marked as Constitution Day when the drafting of the constitution finally got completed. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment was the first to commence this in 2015.  But there is more than appreciating the efforts of members involved in making and drafting it.

It began on 9th December 1946 when the Constituent Assembly conducted first session to draft the Constitution. The Assembly was established only a month ago with Sachchidananda as temporary Chairman. First president of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad and Vice President H.C. Mookerjee was also the part of the Assembly.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was chosen as the chairman of the committee responsible to draft the Constitution. He was the Minister of Law and Justice then. Thus, the day is also called as National Law Day to pay tribute to him as his served a crucial role in making the Constitution.

  1. Although Dr. B.R. Ambedkar is widely regarded as the Father of the Indian Constitution, the man who put together the entire thing on paper was famous calligrapher Prem Bihari Raizada who had handwritten the entire document.

2. The document was 145,000 words long initially

3. Indian Constitution was not at all type written or printed in a digital format. The document was purely written in calligraphy where 254 ink bottles were used.

4. It was written in two languages- Hindi and English

5. The constitution of India is an amalgamation of different ideas, laws, and procedures borrowed from U.K. U.S, Ireland, Australia, France, Canada, Japan, and few more countries. Thus it is called a bag of borrowings.

6. A very surprising fact to know is that initially there were no mentioning of secular and socialist word in the document. It was added later in 1976 during the Emergency.

7. The entire document was drafted in 2 years, 11 months, and 17 days.constitution day facts

Every year on 26th November, this day is celebrated with the aim to educate citizens about the values mentioned in the draft. This year, the Government has launched a course online a day ago under the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. The course was launched by Law Minister Kiren Rijjiju.
