Independence Day 2024: India is going to celebrate its 78th Independence Day on August 15. The country got independence from colonial rule on August 15, 1947, after a long struggle that lasted for almost two centuries. India gained independence from British rule after ruling it for more than 200 years.
The day celebrates and honours all those involved in India’s freedom struggle who fought valiantly against the oppressive colonial rule while suffering or even sacrificing their lives for the country. Independence Day reminds us of our shared history of struggle and the brotherhood that unites us.
Independence Day History
India got independence from British rule on August 15, 1947. On the eve of India’s independence, Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of independent India, hailed this historic achievement as a ‘rendezvous with destiny’.
The struggle for India’s independence officially began with the ‘Revolt of 1857’. Later the movement progressed under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi in the early 20th century. On July 4, 1947, the Indian Independence Bill was introduced in the British House of Commons and thereafter Independence Day began to be celebrated on August 15 from 1947.
Independence Day 2024: Theme
The theme for this year’s celebrations is “Vikasit Bharat”, which means “Developed India”, which is in line with the Government of India’s vision of transforming the country into a developed country by 2047, which coincides with the centenary (100 years) of independence.
Every year, the Independence Day celebrations take place at the historic Red Fort in Delhi, where the Prime Minister hoists the national flag and delivers a speech.
Significance
Traditionally, the Prime Minister of India hoists the national flag and addresses the nation on Independence Day. This speech reflects the country’s progress, achievements and future goals. This year’s speech will be PM Modi’s 11th consecutive Independence Day speech and the first during his third term.
It will be broadcasted live on Doordarshan at 7:30 am. Also, it will be streamed on the Press Information Bureau (PIB) YouTube channel and will be available on social media platforms including X (formerly Twitter) through @PIB_India and the PMO Twitter handle.
Additionally, the government is encouraging public participation through initiatives such as the Har Ghar Tiranga movement, urging citizens to hoist the national flag at their homes and businesses.
