Senate to Vote $1.66 Trillion Funding Bill that Overhauls U.S. Election Law

U.S. House to Vote $1.66 Trillion Funding Bill

A $1.66 trillion package that provides the U.S. military with significant cash, sends emergency relief to Ukraine and keeps all government agencies open through September 30, 2023, is scheduled for a vote in the U.S. House of Representatives on Friday.

President Joe Biden would receive the proposal if it were adopted by the Senate and the Democratic-controlled House to enact before the temporary funding cut-off on Friday at midnight (0500 GMT Saturday).

The government has to operate on temporary extensions of last year’s budget levels as a result of Congress’s repeated failure to enact a funding bill on time, which both Democrats and Republicans claim poses concerns to national security.

The package is opposed by House Republicans, who claim it is overly bloated and was drafted in secret by top legislative figures. On a bipartisan vote of 68-29, the 4,155-page law was approved on Thursday in the Senate.

The massive full-year measure relieves Republican leaders, who will take control of the chamber on January 3 as a result of the midterm elections held in November, of a significant burden.

Despite the fact that many House Republicans stated that they would prefer to simply legislate another temporary funding bill that would run into the beginning of the following year.

As a result, House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy will be able to concentrate on his campaign for the powerful position of House speaker rather than getting into a heated argument at the start of the year.

Even though the majority of his caucus backs him, a small number of conservative Republicans have spoken out against his campaign. This is worrying because he needs support from all 435 House members.
