Guru Nanak Jayanti also known as Gurupurab, is celebrated all over the country as the birth anniversary of the first Sikh Guru – Guru Nanak Dev Ji. He was the founder of the Sikh community.

It is the most important festival for Sikhs and is celebrated on the day of Kartik Purnima in the month of Kartik, 15 days after Diwali. This year, the day falls on November 19 and Sikhs are celebrating the 552nd birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Who Was Guru Nanak Dev Ji ?

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the first of the ten Sikh gurus and is widely known for his political, social, and spiritual beliefs. He was born in 1969 in a village called Talwandi, which is currently in Nankana Sahib, Pakistan.

He was known for his connection to God through prayers. He wrote a sacred book known as Guru Granth Sahib in which he mentioned all his beliefs and teachings. The idea behind this book is the belief that there is only one God for everyone in this world- who does not know any fear and has any enemies.

Guru Nana+ Ji had also described different types of evils in the world. According to him, there are five evils that make life miserable- ego, anger, greed, attachment, and lust. In his book, he has taught selfless service to humanity, prosperity, and social justice to all.

On Guru Nanak Jayanti, all the devotees visit Gurudwara for prayer. The celebration includes the “Akhand Path” of the holy book of Sikhs i.e. Guru Granth Sahib. It takes forty-eight hours to complete. Therefore, they begin reading the book two days before the festival.

After that, they play traditional musical instruments and display of material art forms.
