General Bipin Rawat was a crucial person in the history of the defense of the country. He was born on 16th March 1958 and today on his birth anniversary, we have collected a few traits about him that made his career worth respecting. Bipin Rawat served as the first Chief of the Defense Staff (CDS), the highest position in the Indian Army.

General Bipin Rawat on many other prominent posts prior to serving as CDS. These include the 57th Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) of the Indian Armed Forces and the 26th Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) of the Indian Army as well.

General Bipin Rawat was born in Pauri, Pauri Garhwal district in Uttarakhand. He was born to Army official Lieutenant General Lakshman Singh Rawat. Here are a few points that brief the upbringing of our valiant leader:

  • Graduated from the  National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy where he was awarded the Sword of Honour;
  • Commissioned into his father’s unit- 11 Gorkha Rifles;
  • Promoted to the rank of Brigadier, commanded 5 sector Rashtriya Rifles in Sopore;
  • Served as a Commander of a Multinational Brigade as part of MONUSCO in the United States;
  • Promoted to General Officer and commanded 19 Infantry Division at Uri;
  • Major General Staff (MGGS) at Headquarters Eastern Command;
  • Promoted as Lieutenant General and appointed General officer commanding (GOC) III Corps at Dimapur;
  • After that, General Bipin Rawat was to Army Commander grade and was appointed as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Southern Command;
  • Later, he sought to become Vice Chief of the Army Staff at the Army Headquarters;
  • Then he was appointed as Chief of Army Staff;
  • General Bipin Rawat was the senior-most officer of the staff, regarding which he was appointed as Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee of the Indian Armed Forces from September to December 2019;
  • He then served as the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) of the Indian Armed Forces from January 2020 until he died in a helicopter crash in December 2021.
