History

Ganesh Chaturthi

The history of Ganesh Chaturthi dates back to the 18th century, when the Peshwas, followers of Lord Ganesha, started the public Vinayak festival in Pune in the month of Bhadrapada. During the British rule, the festival was not celebrated with as much energy and love, but in 1893 Lokmanya Tilak played a vital role in making the festival popular among the people again.

Ganesh Chaturthi is a day that marks the rebirth of the deity to represent new beginnings. Legend has it that Goddess Parvati created an idol of a baby with sandalwood paste and infused divine powers into it. A small child emerged from the idol, who addressed her as Maa. Goddess Parvati was blessed with a son, whom she felt would always be devoted to her.
