One of the best actors from two world of cinema, Bollywood, and Hollywood, Irrfan Khan died on 29 April 2020. The actor will always be remembered for his stunning and bold acting skills. He gave us some of the best movies in Indian cinema.

Sahabzade Irfan Ali Khan belonged to Rajasthan. His parents were Saeeda Begum Khan and Yaseen Ali Khan. Saeeda Begum was blessed with a baby boy who got the name of Irrfan on 7 January in the year 1967. His father ran a tire business.

The young Irrfan was fond of cricket and later he got a chance to play for a tournament as well. He played in the CK Nayudu Trophy under 23 category. Unfortunately, his cricket journey was not long due to a lack of funds.

In 1984, Irrfan went to New Delhi for studying acting. He joined the National School Of Drama after which his acting career started. Besides this, he completed MA from an institute in Jaipur.

Beginning Of His Acting Career

Soon after the completion of graduation in 1987, he got a small role in Salaam Bombay. But, since his acting skills were not good enough to take him to the final cut.

He was then seen in a Doordarshan teleplay, Laal Ghaas Par Neele Ghode. Later on, he got roles in various shows for popular TV channels such as Star-Plus, SET India, and more. His 90s went in performing for the television serials.

In 2001, Asif Kapadia’s “The Warrior” gave him a recognition when the movie was opened in an international film festival. The film was considered as a historical film as it was completed within 11 weeks.

During 2003-2004, Irrfan worked in short films. In 2005, he got a lead role in his first Bollywood movie, Rog. He got lots of appreciation for his acting and soon he was seen in several films not only in the lead role but also in supporting role.

Not only Bollywood, but Irrfan also worked in a Telugu film as well as, the movie was Sainikudu. The first box office hit for which he got the award of Filmfare Best Supporting Actor was Metro.

Unlike other actors, Irrfan continued to work in television shows. Remember the show Mano Ya Na Mano, the show was anchored by him. Another such show in which he showed his hosting skills was Kyaa Kahein.

In 2008, The film Slumdog Millionaire released in which Irrfan played the role of a police inspector. It was the first international success not only for the actor but for the Indian cinema.

Soon after the success, the actor started getting roles in Hollywood movies such as The Amazing Spider-Man, Life of Pi. Also, he worked in the HBO series In Treatment.

Later on, the actor gave some of the best movies of Indian cinema that depicts the life of a common man and his struggles. Movies like The Lunchbox, Hindi Medium, and Talvar are the best work of his life.

The final appearance of the actor was seen in the movie, Angrezi Medium. He was seen in the movie with Radhika Madan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Deepak Dobriyal. A month ago, on 13 March 2020, the movie was released.

The actor married his fellow classmate Sutapa Sikdar who was also doing graduation from NSD. The couple got married in February 1995. It was the year 2012 when he changed his name by adding an extra “r” to his name.

There was no superstitious reason behind it but the actor said he liked the sound of his name with extra r. Furthermore, he cut Khan from his name saying his work defines him.

Irrfan was also the brand ambassador of a state government campaign, Resurgent Rajasthan. Moreover, the actor won numerous awards for his films such as:

  • 4 Filmfare Awards for the movies- Paan Singh Tomar, Hindi Medium, Life In A Metro, and Hasil
  • Asian Filmfare Awards for the Lunchbox
  • National Film Awards for Paan Singh Tomar
  • He was also honored with Padma Shri in the year 2011

In 2018, March he gave a shocking news to the film industry and his fans via a tweet. He said he has rare cancer called a neuroendocrine tumor. The actor returned to India in Feb 2019 after treatment in the UK.

28 April 2020, he got admitted to a hospital in Mumbai after a few days his mother passed. Following treatment for a colon infection, he took his last breathe on 29 April 2020.

His death is the biggest loss to the film industry. Everyone, from Bollywood to Hollywood and PM Modi has expressed condolences on his death.
