FASTag to End Soon! New GNSS Toll Collection System Coming from May 1

FASTag and GNSS

Traveling on the roads will become even more comfortable from May 1, 2025, as the central government is going to introduce a new GPS-based toll collection system. In this direction, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is preparing to completely eliminate the FASTag system and adopt this state-of-the-art satellite-based technology. Under this new system, the toll will be calculated based on the distance covered by the vehicles. Let us know in detail what is this GPS-based toll collection system and how it will work.

What is the GNSS-Based Toll Collection System?

The Fastag system being used for toll collection in the country will soon be replaced by the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Recently, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari announced in Nagpur that the new GNSS-based toll system would be started by the end of April. Earlier this system was expected to be implemented from April 1, but after some delay, it will now be fully implemented across the country within the next 15 days.

Key Difference Between FASTag and GNSS

Like FASTag with RFID technology, a GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) based toll system is also being introduced, but it will not require putting a tag on the windshield of the vehicle. In this new system, an on-board unit (OBU) or tracker will be installed in the vehicles, which will monitor their movement through satellite. The toll amount will be decided based on the distance covered by the vehicle on the highway and will be automatically deducted from the linked digital wallet. This modern toll system will support both prepaid and postpaid options.

FASTag users will have to do this work

Vehicle owners can use their existing FASTag till 30 April 2025.

From May 1, it will be mandatory to install a government-approved GPS device in all vehicles.

Under the new system, vehicle owners will have to link their bank account to the GPS toll system.

After the successful completion of the entire process, the old FASTag sticker can be removed.

Benefits of GNSS-Based Toll Collection

The new GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) based toll system will provide many facilities to the passengers traveling on the highway. Through this technology, there will be no need to stop at the toll plaza, which will save waiting time and make the journey more convenient. You will have to pay toll as much as you travel. With the implementation of this system, the possibility of manual errors will be reduced and incidents of fraud will also be curbed.
