EPFO UAN Generation and Activation Now Only Through UMANG App – Complete Guide Inside

UMANG App

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation has made the UMANG app mandatory for generating and activating Universal Account Number (UAN). This new rule has come into effect from August 1, 2025. The new system uses Aadhaar-based face authentication technology (FAT) to make the process easy and secure.

According to the official circular, all new UAN allotments will be done only through the UMANG app, using FAT. This step has been taken to ensure better onboarding and eliminate problems for new and existing members of the EPFO. Let’s know about it in detail.

UMANG App

Any employee who wants to generate a new UAN or activate an existing UAN will have to use the UMANG app. Apart from this, this app will also be used to update EPFO records through biometric face authentication. The Aadhaar Face RD app will also have to be installed to complete this process. However, Nepal, Bhutan, and international employees are exempted from this. Their UAN can still be generated through their employer.

How to generate UAN using UMANG app

  • First, you need to open the Umang app on your phone and select UAN allotment and activation.
  • Enter your Aadhaar number and linked mobile number.
  • After giving consent, tap on “Send OTP”.
  • After verifying the OTP, proceed for face scan authentication.
  • If no existing UAN is found, the system will automatically generate the UAN.
  • After this, it will send it to your registered number via SMS.

How to activate your UAN:

  • First, open the Umang app on your phone and select UAN activation.
  • After entering your UAN, also enter the Aadhaar number and mobile number.
  • After giving consent, complete the OTP verification.
  • Authenticate using the Aadhaar Face RD app.
  • You will receive a confirmation SMS with your temporary password, and the UAN will be activated.

If you have already activated your UAN but want to update the record through biometric authentication, use the “Face Authentication of Already Activated UAN” option on the Umang app. Scan your face to update your photograph and address in the EPFO database.

EPFO’s update process is designed to enhance data accuracy and user autonomy. Once activated, members can avail a range of services such as viewing EPF passbook, filing claims, downloading e-UAN card, and updating KYC.
