An electric highway will be a network of roads or highways, which is equipped with charging infrastructure specially designed for electric vehicles (EVs). These highways usually feature charging systems along the route to make long distance travel more convenient for electric vehicle drivers. Recently, a news published in ET also claimed that the government is working on a plan to develop electric highways along the Golden Quadrilateral in an effort to reduce fuel consumption and vehicle emissions through electrification of intercity public transport.

The news claimed that the central government’s target is to build 6,000 km of electric highways. The project is to be launched in the next seven years, with the aim of accelerating the adoption of electric mobility and facilitating the deployment of electric buses across the country. The e-highway will feature charging infrastructure powered by green energy. This initiative is part of the 2030 – PM Public Transport Service Program.

Plan to encourage the purchase of electric vehicles

The media report claimed that the development of electric highways is likely to happen simultaneously with the entry of electric buses, which will accelerate the establishment of an ecosystem for EVs in India. The new e-highway is expected to speed up the development of charging infrastructure, encouraging more and more people to buy electric vehicles for daily travel.
