Dr Harish Chandra Verma Honored by “Padma Shri”

A highly popular man in the field of Indian Science was awarded Padma Shri by President Ram Nath Kovind on 8th November 2021. Dr. Harish Chandra Verma (also known as H.C. Verma) is from the Department of Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur as Prof. Verma was awarded Padma Shri for his contribution in the field of Science and Engineering.

Prof. Verma is very popular among the 11th and 12th class students. He is famous for his well-known reference book “Concept of Physics”. This book was published in two parts, especially for IIT JEE preparation. He has simplified Physics in a very easy way in his book so that any student can understand the biggest formulas and definitions.

In reputed journals, he published 139 research papers and conducted more than 600 physics experiments. He also wrote many books for graduate and undergraduate students, school text, and reference books.

Well Known Teacher

Dr. Harish Chandra Verma taught for 22 years in IIT Kanpur. He has taught a number of professional and core courses there. The review of the students is that the courses were very effective and greatly benefited them. He is a co-founder of Shiksha Sophan, a societal upliftment inaugural for economically disadvantaged children adjacent to the IIT Kanpur campus.

Prof. Verma was born in Darbhanga, Bihar on 8th April 1952. In childhood, he was not a very intelligent student. He graduated with a B.SC from Patna Science College. After that, he cleared the Graduate Aptitude Test of Engineering (GATE) and got admission to IIT Kanpur for a master’s degree in Physics (from 1975 to 1977).

Later he joined Patna science college as a lecturer in 1980 and stayed there for 15 years. During this time he wrote his book “Concept of Physics” and published it in 1992.
