Flipping over the US policy on the Golan Heights for a long time, On Thursday, the US President Donald Trump stated that it’s time for the United States to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the territory.
Trump tweeted, “After 52 years it is time for the United States to fully recognize Israel’s Sovereignty over the Golan Heights, which is of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability!”
As per the reports of CNN, the statement was released just a few days before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is ready to meet Trump at the White House.
In 1981, Isreal formally joined the territory after capturing the region from Syria during six-day war of 1967.
This addition of Israel has long been criticized by the world community, who regard Golan Heights as engaged territory while Israeli settlements being regarded illegal as per international law.
In response, Netanyahu tweeted “At a time when Iran seeks to use Syria as a platform to destroy Israel, President Trump boldly recognizes Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. Thank you, President Trump! @realDonaldTrump.”
Experts say that Trump’s statement could primarily affect the outcome of the forthcoming Israeli elections.
