Bangladesh Will Now Buy Half The Electricity From Adani

Bangladesh has split the buy of electricity from Gautam Adani’s power company Adani Power. The Bangladesh government has taken this choice due to the decrease in demand due to winter and delay in payment of outstanding payments.

This information has been given as per the news agency report. Earlier on 31 October, the company had halved the electricity supply to the country due to delay in due payment.

An Adani Power representative said, ‘The company is proceeding to supply electricity to Bangladesh, in spite face that the rising contribution are a major concern. This is making it troublesome to run the plant. We are in steady dialogue with BPDB and senior government officials.

They have assured us that our dues will be paid soon. The company is confident that Bangladesh will fulfill its commitments, just as Adani has fulfilled its contractual obligations.’

Adani Power is supplying this electricity to Bangladesh beneath a 25-year contract signed in 2017. The company supplies this electricity from its $2 billion power plant located in Jharkhand, which has two units and each has a capacity of 800 megawatts.

According to the report, in November, one of Adani Power’s plants ran at only 41.82% capacity, which is the lowest this year. At the same time, another plant has been closed since November 1. People associated with BPDB told that in the winter of last year, BPDB had purchased about 1,000 MW of electricity from Adani every month.

Crisis-hit Bangladesh is facing a huge shortage of foreign currency and is also failing to pay its dues. The country has a huge dues to Gautam Adani’s company Adani Power. And there is a continuous delay in paying it. Due to this, on 31 October, Adani Power had halved the electricity supplied to Bangladesh due to delay in due payment.

According to BPDB Chairman Mohammad Rezaul Karim, Bangladesh owes Gautam Adani’s company Adani Power about $650 million (about RS 5,508 crore). He said that about $85 million was paid to the company in November and before that in October, $97 million was paid to the company. While the report quoted a source saying that the company’s debt on the country has now increased to $900 million. Adani Power has also described the debt on Bangladesh as a matter of concern.
