Ajit Doval, the fifth and current National Security Advisor to the Prime Minister of India, celebrates his 77th birthday on Thursday (January 20) of 2021. He was born in 1945 in Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand and is famously known as the “James Bond of India”, dedicating 40 years of his life to the nation’s defence. Doval was an Indian Police Service (IPS – retired) officer and joined the Kerala cadre as the Kottayam ASP in 1968. During his time in the Intelligence Bureau, he also served as Director from 2004-05.

Mizoram Peace

He ingeniously succeeded in convincing 6 of the 7 commanders of the Mizo National Front to his side. Famous for their promotion of insurgency in Mizoram during the 1980s, this move was the turning point for them. Consequently, tranquility was then restored in the state of Mizoram.

Kuka Parray and his troops played a critical role in their own surrender.

In 1990, Ajit Doval traveled to Kashmir and successfully communicated with the well-known militant Mohammad Yusuf Parray, also known as Kuka Parray, and his forces to become counter-insurgents. His success was a key factor in paving the way for the Jammu and Kashmir elections in 1996.

7 years undercover in Pakistan

Ajit Doval was a committed field officer and was willing to do anything necessary to complete his assignments. Reports suggest that he devoted 7 years to working for the Indian government in Pakistan, learning the language and becoming an authority on the country’s history, culture and politics. This expertise enabled him to stay in Pakistan for over 7 years, despite the risk, to carry out his assignments.

Release of 46 Indian Nurses

In June 2014, Doval embarked on a top-secret mission to Iraq wherein he was instrumental in the liberation of 46 Indian nurses trapped in Tikrit hospital. Making contact with important figures in the Iraqi government and ISIS militants, he managed to have the nurses transferred to Erbil City in safety.

Role in Operation Black Thunder

During the 1980s, the Khalistan militancy in Punjab reached its peak, and Ajit Doval was a key field agent involved in infiltrating the militant groups that were active in the region. Prior to Operation Black Thunder, Doval disguised himself as a Pakistani ISI agent and operated as a rickshaw puller in the vicinity of the Golden Temple in order to make contact with the militants holed up inside.

Doval had successfully infiltrated the Golden Temple and provided crucial intelligence to the National Security Guard, resulting in a successful strike against the militants with a minimal loss of life and property in the temple. His outstanding efforts were honoured with the Kirti Chakra, the first time an Indian police officer has been awarded this distinction.

Negotiating with Hijackers of IC 814 in Kandahar

In 1999, Ajit Doval was instrumental in preventing a disaster when Indian Airlines IC 814 was hijacked to Kandahar. Despite the criticism of India’s submission to the hijackers’ demands, Doval was able to skillfully manage the incident, thus avoiding further loss of life and harm to the plane.
